Who We are
We are committed to the reality that every child is unique. We are here to provide a warm loving, supportive atmosphere in which each child may feel free to express him or herself, learn, grow and realize his or her potential.
We create an environment which allows each child to feel safe, known, comfortable and accepted for whom he or she is. We believe that children thrive when they are loved, treated with respect and given opportunities to experience learning in a developmentally appropriate program.
We understand and acknowledge the importance of each child’s family. In doing so, we strive to maintain open and supportive communication with parents in order to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.
Elmwood families come from communities all over Lower Westchester including Ardsley, Briarcliff, Chappaqua, Dobbs Ferry, Edgemont, Elmsford, Hackley, Harrison, Hartsdale, Hastings, Irvington, Mohegan Lake, Ossining, Port Chester, New Rochelle, Valhalla, White Plains, Scarsdale, Tarrytown, Yonkers, and Yorktown Heights.
Elmwood plans age-level events throughout the year that bring families together such as story nights, game day, Hour of Code, field trips, dance parties, and picnics. We invite families to celebrate birthdays, read to the class, or share a special interest or skill. Teachers share highlights of the week in emailed newsletters. We have conferences twice a year, and teachers are always available by phone or happy to set up additional meetings.
Elmwood’s teachers are dedicated, creative, and caring. Many of their own children attended Elmwood, and some of our teachers are Elmwood alumni themselves. Our teachers are early childhood professionals who are committed to the Elmwood philosophy and mission. With warmth, affection, and respect, our teachers provide an educational experience that encourages playful learning.
Our teachers meet regularly to plan curriculum for each age level and engage in professional development including CPR/First Aid training. All teachers are members of National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and their monthly journal is part of our staff development.
